Here’s a strange bug I was pulling my hair out trying to diagnose. My Zune media player, as well as Windows Media Player, were taking forever to start playing tracks. I would see “media changing” in the lower left corner for almost 30 seconds or so, then the song would start. That really stinks when you want to jump around different tracks and listen to them.

You’ll never guess what’s causing this delay. It’s the audio enhancements I blogged about before. Poopie. If the “Disable all enhancements” checkbox is not checked, my media players will be slow in starting any song. Check that box, and bam, back to normal.

No idea if this affects iTunes’ playback… I’ll have to give it a try I suppose.

Gah. What the heck could the two have in common? Anyway, I’m blogging about it in the hopes that someone else running into the same problem can find out how to fix it.

Wow! Thank you so much...

I upgraded to Vista and from Day 1 I had this problem, and it was nearly enough for me to switch back to Vista.

... Sorry for the double comment ...

But my previous comment should have read:

"... and it was nearly enough for me to switch back to XP"

Sorry about that, but thanks again.

Genius. Just got a new Vaio and was really pissed off by the delay in flicking from one song to the next. I don't think it's got the same sound card as you - but eventually I found the enhancements in the speaker folder and ... sorted. Funny how irritating a minor thing like that is. Thanks for posting the solution.

Wow!!! Thanks! WMP11 was working fine on XP, but it was driving me nuts on vista. Thanks you!

Problem with this is that to get full sound through all speakers in a 5.1 setup you have to have the "speaker fill" enhancement checked. So either listen to music through right, left and sub woofer only, or wait forever for the next song to play. Pick your poison...

Jake,

Guess for myself, personally, I can't stand when stereo is "upmixed" to 5.1 in a poor way. Vista's built in method doesn't really do it for me. So I always leave it off anyhow. But I agree, it should be fixed. I'm guessing service pack 1 for Vista will take care of it.

Awesome, thanks! That makes just about no sense and works like a charm. Very Vista-ish I suppose. :D

Cheers,
