You're probably wondering how this works. Skyhook pays drivers to drive around your neighborhoods with a GPS device that actively scans for open wireless access points. When one is found, the MAC address of the wireless AP is stored as well as the GPS coordinates. Skyhook has licensed this data to numerous partners, including Google and Apple, to make locating your device/browser work almost instantly, based on nearby access points.
